Ordinances & Charter

If you are looking for information about the current updates being made to town ordinances, please see the Calais Ordinance Advisory Committee page.

Calais Charter

municipal charter allows a municipality to adapt its relationship with state law. Townspeople vote on the language of the charter, and then the charter must pass through the Vermont legislature. The Calais charter was signed into law in the Vermont State House in 2017.

Calais Ordinances

An ordinance is a legislative act from the Selectboard affecting the conduct of its citizens. It carries the state’s authority and has the same effect within a town’s borders as a state statute.
